Newcastle upon Tyne is located on the northern bank of the Tyne in the north-east of England which lies in the county of Tyne and Wear. When touring the city, the river is probably the best place to begin. Six bridges span the Tyne including the first road rail bridge in the world, Robert Stephenson's High Level Bridge dating from 1849; the Swing Bridge from 1876; the iconic Tyne Bridge from 1928. The Gateshead Newcastle Millennium Bridge, the 'blinking eye', which tilts to enable boats to pass through, was awarded both national and international awards for its design. Apart from the bridges, there are a number of historic buildings including Jacobean merchants' houses, now Bessie Surtees House; the Custom's House from 1766 and Trinity House from 1721.

Walk up the hill from the river to the Keep and St. Nicholas' Cathedral, built in the fourteenth century. Walk a little further and you are in the centre of town where you'll find a huge shopping complex. To the west, at Gallowgate, there is a thriving Chinatown which lies in the shadow of St. James's Park. The town is well endowed with art galleries, museums and concert venues. Newcastle is surrounded by green spaces with parks and gardens. The townspeople are blessed with the Town Moor, a vast area of rough grassland where the Freeman of the city can graze their cows. The largest travelling fair comes to the moor at the end of June each year.
