Oberau is a pleasant ski resort in Austria that lies just three kilometres from the larger resort of Niederau. This old Tyrolean village, complete with baroque church, is situated in the Wildschonau Valley. At an altitude of a little over nine hundred metres and with the highest lift at almost two thousand metres, the resort enjoys good snow cover. Oberau and Niederau provide forty eight kilometres of local piste and as part of the Ski Juwel area this increases to almost one hundred and fifty kilometres. Although the resort is ideal for novices, families and intermediates, there are a number of demanding black runs and good off piste routes for the experienced skier & boarder. Nursery slopes are conveniently found in the centre of the village, ideal for beginners and those with children. Intermediates should take the Markbachjoch gondola or the Lanerkopfl chairlift or the link to Alpbach where they'll find a large variety of blues and reds. The wide slopes are ideal for boarders and there are two snow parksin Wildschonau and one in Alpbach. There are fifty kilometres of cross country trails. Ski schools have an excellent reputation and there is a ski kindergarten for young children.
The Oberau ski season opens towards the end of December and closes at the end of March. The village is a popular summer destination as it attracts climbers, hill walkers and mountain cyclists, as well as those who simply wish to relax in a stunningly beautiful landscape and breath pure mountain air.
