Bangkok city breaks take you to an exciting city in south east Asia. The capital of Thailand, it is a huge metropolis with a population of over eight million, a fascinating city where old and new sit cheek by jowl. Lying along the banks of the Chao Phraya River and with canals criss-crossing the city, the waterways remain a form of transportation. The city has been known to flood during the rainy season. Bangkok has a tropical climate with average temperatures reaching mid thirties. The monsoon season which begins in mid May and reaches its peak in September, is best avoided. However if you don't mind torrential downpours, there are advantages. The temperature is slightly lower, tourists are fewer in number and costs are cheaper. If on the other hand you are looking for winter sun, a low cost Bangkok city break may be just the ticket.
The historic centre of Bangkok is the Rattanakosin Island in the Phra Nakhon District. Here you'll find the Grand Palace and the more important Buddist temples. The fine neoclassical Ananta Samakhorn Throne building, in the neighbouring district of Dusit, comes high on the list of visitor attractions. Traditional markets are also found in this area.
Bangkok has attempted to solve the gridlock on the roads with an underground system and a sky train which certainly makes it easier for visitors to get around. You can of course use the waterways and take river taxis. There is so much to see in the city that a short break will not do it justice. Your trip will require careful planning and you when it comes to sightseeing you will need to prioritise your list according to your interests. Many visitors come to shop as Bangkok is noted for its vast markets where you can haggle over prices for just about anything. You can of course visit the large malls selling designer goods, but most visitors head for the markets with their fakes, some of which are excellent copies. Thailand is also noted for its silk. Items of clothing can be made up in a very short time and at a fraction of the cost that you'd pay at home.
Bangkok's hotels and apartments offer good quality accommodation regardless of star rating and the standard of service is exceptionally high. The hundreds of eateries cater for all tastes and budgets. Thai food is renowned for its aromatic flavours. If you haven't tasted it before, give your taste buds a treat. Bangkok nightlife has a rather wild reputation and it certainly has a sleazy side. It is a tolerant city so it seems that 'anything goes'. Whatever your mood, you'll find a venue to suit.
