Almeria itself is always worth a day trip.

The holiday season in Cabo de Gata lasts from April until around October and temperatures range from being in the twenties in the spring and autumn months to the thirties in the height of summer. Given that hiking is a popular attraction in this part of Spain, we would probably advise against travelling in the height of summer and instead opt for a spring or autumn trip.
