La Gomera is one of the most remote Canary Islands and is also the second smallest of them all. Despite its small size, it has a great selection of resorts to choose from including its capital San Sebastián de La Gomera which is a good base for walking and exploring and Valle Gran Rey which is probably the island’s largest tourist resort. The island is extremely picturesque and is a big hit with the more adventurous sort of traveller.
Holidays to the island of La Gomera are a fantastic choice of destination, even though it is a little bit tricky to get to. The island’s airport only receives local planes from Tenerife Nord Airport so you will have to make your way there if you want to fly. Alternatively, a more popular route into the island is a ferry from the resort of Los Cristianos in Tenerife. Make sure you check the Cheekytrip comparison site to find holidays to the island of La Gomera from your local airport. La Gomera is at its most lively during the summer period that runs from Spring until Autumn. Temperatures tend to reach the mid 20s throughout these summer months but they don’t drop much at all during the winter months so this is a viable destination all-year-round.
One of the best things to do on the island is to visit the Garajonay National Park. This place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is situated to the north of the island. It contains the largest laurel rainforest remaining on earth and has a selection of footpaths and trails of varying difficulty levels. The island has some gorgeous beaches and the one that we would recommend is probably at the resort of Valle Gran Rey which has safe and sandy beaches. The waters are notoriously ferocious around this island so it is recommended to stay extremely cautious with younger children or if you are not a confident swimmer.
There isn’t a large selection of accommodation on this remote island but the resort with the most variety is Valle Gran Rey with its stunning apartments, terraces and villas. This resort also hosts the widest selection of bars and restaurants on the island. If you are keen on trying some of the local cuisine, be sure to have a look at the watercress soup with gofio (maize flour) and some of the fantastic local wine, especially Garajonay white wine.
