Weather in the UK can be unpredictable at times. After cold winters, by the time it gets to March, it's not unreasonable to be crying out for some sunshine. Take matters into your own hands and take a holiday. In March, the colours of spring begin to emerge and the sun starts to shine throughout Europe and beyond. Here are some of the best places to visit:
Somewhere with sunshine and beaches... head to Gran Canaria
Everyone knows the Canary Islands are a safe bet if you're after some late winter sun. Gran Canaria has an average temperature of 19°C in March, and the island has some of the best beaches across the islands. Head to Playa del Ingles or Amadores if it's a lively beach resort you're after. There are plenty of water sports to keep you busy, and beachfront late night bars and restaurants can be found in abundance too. Head to La Palmera Sur for some delicious Canarian/Japanese-fused cuisine.
Somewhere a bit hotter... try Cape Verde
With an average March temperature of 23°C, if you're willing to travel that little bit further, Cape Verde could be a real winter sun winner. The capital of Sal is a scenic fishing island with stunning coastal stretches and white-sand beaches (Santa Maria beach is a particular highlight). The surrounding ocean hosts conditions perfect for snorkelling and dolphin watching. Hop on the ferry over to the island of Santo Antão, full of mountainous landscapes perfect for hiking in. Cape Verde can be reached in around 6 hours from the UK with flights available from Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Gatwick and Manchester.
A city break... see the sights of Amsterdam
Although there's no guarantee what the weather will bring in March, there's enough to see in the Dutch capital that it doesn't really matter what it's like. If you can catch some spring sunshine, head to the Keukenhof Gardens. The vibrant gardens open for a short but sweet 8 weeks each year and are home to 7 million flower bulbs across 32 hectares of the land. There are some great family-friendly activities in the gardens, including treasure hunts, a petting zoo and a hedge maze! In the city centre, between 11th-27th, the twice-yearly Amsterdam Restaurant Week sees 91 establishments across the city offering 3-course dinners for the fixed price €28.50.
Somewhere a bit closer to home...visit Dublin
Dublin has emerged as one of the most exciting city breaks in Europe; the city is brimming with trendy bars and restaurants whilst still maintaining its authentic Irish charm. It's no secret Dublin is synonymous with drinking, and there are plenty of good pubs to visit. The Brazen Head is one of the most historic (and best) in the city - James Joyce referenced it Ulysses - and dates all the way back to 1198. Between the 14th-18th of March, St Patrick's Festival grips the city with huge street parties and around 4000 performers taking to the streets - it's certainly an experience.
